English study is mandatory in NSW from Kindergarten to Year 12.
Students learn about the English language through written, spoken and visual texts of increasing complexity as they progress through their schooling.
An understanding of the English language is central to how we communicate and essential for intellectual, social and emotional development.
The study of English should develop a love of literature and learning and be challenging and enjoyable. It develops skills to enable students to experiment with ideas and expression, to become active, independent and lifelong learners, to work with each other and to reflect on their learning.
Reading Factory
In 2021, Condell Park Public School established a withdrawal reading intervention program called the Reading Factory. The aim of the Reading Factory is to quickly raise identified students to their expected reading levels through a short, sharp burst of support. The Reading Factory team consists of 2 Learning and Support teachers, 2 School Learning Support Officers and a Speech Therapist. Students attend the Reading Factory, 4 times per week for 30 minute small group lessons which focus on phonological awareness skills and reading instruction.
The positive impact of the Reading Factory program is evident within the collected data. The data, demonstrates that all Reading Factory students improve their reading levels, develop their knowledge of reading strategies and acquire advanced phonological awareness skills. This improvement in their reading ability and knowledge of strategies, enables the students to return to their classroom with an increase in confidence and a toolkit which they can utilise to problem solve independently.
